I did my first real Portland hike yesterday. I've done some smaller things here before moving here, but those weren't really planned. It's an interesting bit of landscape, up through Eagle Creek... a mossy forested canyon just off of the Columbia River Gorge. We went about 3.5 miles in to High Bridge (overlooking the rapids from about 120 feet up), and then turned around and came straight back out. It's not quite as satisfying as doing a loop hike, but there are plenty of those to be had. As someone put it, this is my new "backyard," and I'm quite happy about that. Here are some pictures, and they don't really do it justice. As we came back out, going downhill, there was a point where the mist was moving away over the creek and everything looked like it was shrinking. I didn't want to say anything because I thought I'd sound like a weirdo, but I wasn't alone in noticing. It was quite trippy, especially when you're along the side of canyon wall, and not much is separating you from a treacherous fall!
